Support Unit for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Unit Leader: Hiroyuki Kamiguchi (Concurrent Post)

Siemens 3T
Equipped with 7-Tesla and 3-Tesla MRI systems, we support non-invasive MRI studies on human subjects conducted by laboratories within CBS. The subjects can participate in MRI studies are limited to healthy adults of 20 years and older. One experiment is limited maximum 2 hours from the finishing of preparation. In order to use the MRI systems, the head of laboratory intending to use the MRI facility should submit the experimental proposal and obtain the permission from the RIKEN 3rd Safety and Ethics Committee in advance.
Agilent 4T

Procedures for applying services
  1. An experimental application should be submitted to the fMRI Support Unit by the head of laboratory. Researchers who will play the primary role in collecting experimental data and performing data analyses should be identified in the application
  2. The fMRI Support Unit will then schedule a meeting (or multiple meetings, if necessary) with the laboratory to
    1. assess the novelty and scientific merits in conducting the proposed project
    2. review safety issues that might arise in the proposed project
    3. determine the optimal way to utilize existing (periphery) devices, or if necessary, to introduce new devices
    4. outline an experimental schedule
  3. The laboratory should then submit a formal application to the RIKEN Research Ethics Committee that oversees experiments using human materials
  4. Data collection and analysis
